We are thrilled to announce that September’s tasting event will feature author Andrea Freeman in discussion with Ahmed Best about Andrea’s James Beard Award and L.A. Times Book Prize winning book, “Ruin Their Crops on the Ground: The Politics of Food in the United States, from the Trail of Tears to School Lunches,” the first and definitive history of the use of food in United States law and politics as a weapon of conquest and control.
Andrea Freeman is the Second Century Chair Professor of Law at Southwestern Law School, a Fulbright Scholar, and the pioneer of the theory of food oppression. She writes and researches at the intersection of critical race theory, food policy, health, and consumer credit.
Co-Founder of the AfroRithm Futures Group and host of The Afrofuturist Podcast, Ahmed Best is an executive producer, actor, writer, director, producer, educator, and futurist and Telly, GLAAD, Ovation and Annie award winner. Ahmed plays Jedi Master Kelleran Beq in The Mandalorian, the first CGI main character in movie history (Jar Jar Binks) and starred in the Broadway musical Stomp. He’s a Senior Fellow at USC’s Annenberg School for Journalism and Communication, Professor at USC School of Dramatic Arts, and Visiting Professor at Stanford’s Hasso Plattner Institute of design.
