About Us
Makai Chocolate is made from cacao grown exclusively on the Hamakua Coast on the Island of Hawaii. This location is ideal for growing cacao to make the best chocolate thanks to the deep soil found on the windward slope of the dormant Mauna Kea volcano and plentiful rainfall.
In the Hawaiian language, Makai means “toward the ocean.”
Our farm is on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.
Our location on the lower slope of Mauna Kea is ideal for growing cacao to make the best chocolate.
The cacao farm occupies fifteen acres on the Hamakua Coast north of Hilo at an average elevation of 450 feet above sea level. As of Fall 2017 we have 1100 cacao trees growing and another 300+ started in the greenhouse. We plan to expand to 4000 total trees. Our chocolate is made by us in small batches in the micro-factory located on our farm.
You can buy chocolate directly from our farm located on Old Mamalahoa Highway between Pepeekeo and Honomu on the Hamakua Coast north of Hilo. Or you may schedule a visit to sample some of our chocolate products before buying. Because we are primarily busy growing cacao and making chocolate and all visits must be scheduled in advance. We will provide directions to persons who schedule a visit.
