Oftentimes, newcomers to the shop will ask “How did you come up with the name Yellow Bird?” and we are always happy to relay the story—although it’s becoming quite a tale to tell!
First, it’s the childhood nickname of the owner. She garnered this name during an early elementary classroom play about animals in a pet shop. You guessed it–she was a yellow bird that flew around the pet shop and exclaimed “Buy me, buy me, I’m Yellow Bird!”. In the end, all the animals at the pet shop were purchased because the customer just couldn’t decide on one!
Fast forward more than a couple of decades and while brainstorming pop-up chocolate shop names, one of the owner’s sisters recalled that nickname and it just seemed to fit!
The story continues…while conducting one pop-up in particular at our town’s awesome independent bookstore, the book proprietor asked if the name was connected to the old Mills Brothers song, Yellow Bird. We had not, and now we love this song and the history of its popular medley and the original Haitian poem.
And the story continues even further! Upon meeting our Honduras coffee and cacao supplier, he inquired if our shop’s name was referring to the little yellow bird’s that drill holes in the fruiting cacao pods to get the sweet cacao juice! What?!? Well, YES! We named our shop after that little bird with excellent taste!
From a childhood nickname to a calypso song, to the cacao fruit snatcher, we can’t think of any better name for Yellow Bird Chocolate Shop!
